Knowing the shutdown actions supported

Shutdown Action Description
Powering off computer Saves any Windows settings that you changed and writes any information that is currently stored in memory to your hard disk. Shuts down the system and turns off the power.
Your computer must support the power-off feature.
Only available for Windows 2000 and XP.
Shutting down Windows Shuts down the system to a point at which it is safe to turn off the power.
If the system supports the power-off feature, the power is also turned off.
Rebooting computer Shuts down the system and then restarts the system.
Hibernating computer A state in which your computer saves any Windows Millennium Edition settings that you changed, writes any information that is currently stored in memory to your hard disk, and turns off your computer. Unlike shutting down, when you restart your computer, your desktop is restored exactly as it was before hibernation.
Hibernate appears only if your computer supports this feature.
Suspending computer Puts the system into the standby state : a state in which your computer consumes less electric power when it is idle, but remains available for immediate use. Typically, you’d put your computer on standby to save power instead of leaving it on for extended periods.
While on standby, information in computer memory is not saved on your hard disk. If the computer loses electric power, the information in memory will be lost.
Logging off current user Shuts down all running applications and then it logs the current user off.
Locking up workstation Locks the workstation's display, protecting it from unauthorized use.
This function has the same result as pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and clicking Lock Workstation. To unlock the workstation, the user must log in.
Common reasons for failure include no user is logged on, or the workstation is already locked.
Only available for Windows 2000 and XP.

NOTE: Your computer may not behave as describe above as the behaviors of the actions above are dependent on your computer's hardware configuration and Windows version.
